Busitema University Hosts Successful First Open Sports Gala
Busitema University was a hive of activity from 6th to 8th March 2026 as students gathered for the highly anticipated Open Sports Gala, an event that brought together participants from across the institution’s campuses, schools, and sports clubs.
The event, organized by the Directorate of Sports, attracted more than 300 participants, creating an atmosphere filled with energy, teamwork, and friendly competition. Students and staff turned up in large numbers to support their teams, transforming the university sports grounds into a vibrant arena of cheers and campus pride.
The first edition of the Open Sports Gala was hosted at the Busitema Campus, with the main competitions taking place from 7th to 8th March. Students from Namasagali, Arapai, Nagongera, Busitema, Pallisa, Mbale, and Kabwangasi campuses competed in various sporting disciplines, representing their respective campuses in the tournament.
Throughout the gala, teams battled it out in a series of ball games, including football, basketball, volleyball, rugby, and netball. Football matches in particular drew the largest crowds, while netball and volleyball fixtures also kept spectators engaged with closely contested encounters.

The university sports grounds remained lively throughout the competitions as students displayed impressive athletic ability and determination in pursuit of victory.
Beyond the university teams, the gala also featured visiting sides such as Select Football Clubs, who played friendly matches against some of the university teams. Their participation highlighted the growing collaboration between the university and surrounding communities through sports activities.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Agnes Baluka Masajja, the Deputy Chief Sports Officer, congratulated the students selected to represent their campuses and encouraged them to continue balancing sports with their academic pursuits.
“Keep up the spirit and continue embracing sports alongside education,” she said, noting that participation in sports can open doors to additional opportunities and that some of the students could grow into future sports legends.
The closing ceremony coincided with International Women’s Day on Sunday, 8th March, when athletes were recognized for their participation and commitment. In appreciation of their efforts, all participants received a souvenir, regardless of their match results.
The gesture underscored the university’s commitment to encouraging student participation and celebrating the spirit of sportsmanship under the event’s theme: “Sports for Academic Excellence.”
Several campuses emerged victorious across the different categories. Arapai Campus had a remarkable performance, winning the men’s basketball and men’s football titles, and ultimately emerging as the overall winner in the men’s category.
Namasagali Campus secured victory in men’s volleyball, while Busitema Campus clinched the women’s volleyball title. Nagongera Campus dominated the women’s competitions, delivering strong performances across multiple events.
The successful hosting of the Open Sports Gala marked an important step in strengthening sports culture at Busitema University, while fostering unity, talent development, and healthy competition among students from its diverse campuses.
