Busitema partners with Stanbic bank to empower communities through a Skills-based Training Programs

Busitema University has engaged with Stanbic Bank to explore the re-introduction of its skills-based short-course training program. This initiative aims to equip community members with the essential knowledge, skills, and values necessary to thrive in today's competitive landscape. The program encompasses five short courses; Welding and Metal Part Fabrication (CWM), Post-harvest Handling & Processing Technologies (CPP), Brick Laying and Concrete Practice (BCP), Irrigation Technologies & Innovations (CIT), and Automotive Repair, Operation & Maintenance (CAM). Chaired by Dr. Lillian Gimuguni, the University's academic registrar, the meeting emphasized the success of the program's first cohort (NOV 2022-APRIL 2023), where 64 out of 74 candidates completed the training which was also previously sponsored by Stanbic Bank.   
During the presentation by Mr. Bagoole Christopher; Assistant Innovations Officer at Busitema University, the focus was on directed to the hands-on nature of the courses and the expected skills and competencies of the candidates. Mr. Bagoole outlined the objectives of the program, which include establishing Busitema University as a center of excellence in vocational training, fostering human resource development in collaboration with Stanbic Bank, encouraging youth to attain high levels of knowledge and skills competency, and aligning training with industry requirements. Further still, he stated that the eligibility criteria remain similar to the previous cohort, including merit-based selection for both genders, proof of being a Ugandan resident in specific districts (Busia, Pallisa, Tororo, Soroti, Mbale, and Kamuli), completion of at least UCE (Uganda Certificate of Education), one should not be a holder of any other scholarship and should not exceed 35 years of age.   
Discussions further ensued on enhancing the program's value and profitability for stakeholders, candidates, and the community. Suggestions included integrating topics such as mental health, safety precautions, soft skills, bookkeeping, and fund management into the curriculum. Stanbic Bank pledged to increase scholarship slots from 70 to 100.   
Busitema University expressed gratitude to Stanbic Bank for sponsoring the program and pledged to coordinate with academic departments to set a commencement date.
