Embracing diversity: a conference held to navigate the path to inclusive academic excellence at Busitema University
The Directorate of Quality Assurance at Busitema University has held a conference themed, “Shaping the future From Policy to Practice in Achieving Inclusive Excellence in Academic Settings.” The conference aimed to ensure that the University provides accessible and inclusive academic platforms for all students, with av particular emphasis on Persons with Disabilities. Attendees of the conference included prominent members of the university’s top management: Associate Professor Saphina Biira (Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs), representing the Vice Chancellor; Professor Waako Paul, Dr. Lillian Gimuguni Nabaasa (Academic Registrar), Mr. Aloysius Kiribaki (Chairperson Quality Assurance Committee of Council), Ms. Racheal Nambafu Wandeka (University Secretary), Mrs. Rosemary Mutyable (Chairperson of the University Council) Mr. Gideon Ologe Obbo (Member of University Council), Dr. Lugya Fredrick Kiwuuwa (University Librarian), Dr. Charles Eryenyu (Directorate of Quality Assurance), Ms. Peace Balala (PRO Busitema University), Mr. Wanyama Joseph Erogo (Deputy Dean of Students) and Dr. Joseph Lwanyaga Ddumba (Acting Faculty Dean). The conference also welcomed several other guests with a vested interest in inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities including Honourable Laura Kanushi (Woman Member of Parliament representing PWDs), Hon. Beatrice Wabudeya (Vice chairperson of University Council), and Ms. Esther Kyozira (CEO NUDIPU).
The conference brought together numerous experts to engage in discussions on inclusivity, particularly focusing on translating policies into actionable strategies for inclusive excellence. Mr. Aloysius Kiribaki, the chairperson of the Quality Assurance Committee presented a detailed report based on the campus visits conducted by himself and a delegation from management. The report highlighted findings, challenges and recommendations. Some of the identified challenges included the inadequacy and inaccessibility of ramps at lecture rooms, the absence of disability enhancing software on campus library computers, and the stigmatization of Person with Disabilities among others. Mr. Kiribaki noted that the student-staff engagements were productive, identifying a critical need for new infrastructure to meet the requirements for inclusivity. He also proposed several recommendations, including establishing a dedicated center for inclusion at the University, capturing disability data upon student admission to better understand students from the outset and formulate inclusive policies. Additionally, Professor Saphina Biira emphasized on the importance of developing policies on inclusion, which will be discussed and addressed by the University management. She stressed the need to consider accessibility and inclusivity in the construction of new structures in the University. Several other individuals provided insights and reiterated strategies that stakeholders in Busitema University could adopt to ensure a more inclusive learning environment.
In the closing remarks made by Mrs. Rosemary Mutyabule, she underscored the importance of embracing technologies and other strategies that enhance inclusivity for persons with Disabilities.
