Busitema University to Host the Inaugural Open Lacrosse Championship
Excitement is steadily mounting ahead of the much-anticipated Open Lacrosse Championship, scheduled for November 8th, 2025, at Busitema University’s Main Campus. The tournament is set to be one of the biggest lacrosse gatherings ever held in Eastern Uganda, attracting both men’s and women’s teams from across the region and beyond.

The event, organized in partnership with the Busitema University Directorate of Sports, aims to promote the rapidly growing sport of lacrosse among university and community teams. It also offers a platform for young players to showcase their skills, gain experience, and participate in healthy competition. Speaking ahead of the tournament, Dr. Agnes Baluka, the Deputy Chief Sports at Busitema University, expressed enthusiasm about the increasing popularity of lacrosse both within the university and across Uganda. “We are proud to host the Open Lacrosse Championship as part of our ongoing commitment to developing new sports in the region,” Dr. Baluka said. “This event provides an excellent opportunity for our students and visiting teams to compete, connect, and celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship that defines Busitema University.”

Among the teams confirmed for participation are the Rock Stars Lacrosse Academy from Mumias, Kenya, alongside top Ugandan sides such as Makerere University Business School (MUBS) and Metropolitan International University (MIU) from Kampala. Several teams from Eastern Uganda are also expected to take part, promising a vibrant regional showdown.
Isaac Mutebi, Uganda Lacrosse Development Director, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to supporting the event’s success. “We are working closely with Busitema University to ensure the tournament runs smoothly. The association will provide all necessary technical support to make this a memorable experience for every participant,” Mutebi noted.
Adding to the excitement, the day’s program will feature a rugby exhibition game, giving fans even more to look forward to. The inclusion of rugby underscores Busitema University’s dedication to nurturing a diverse and inclusive sporting culture on campus.
With lacrosse steadily gaining ground across Uganda, the Busitema Open is expected to serve as a vital platform for expanding the sport into new regions, nurturing young talent, and fostering collaboration between universities through sport.
