Busitema University's Climate Change Programme Selected for DAAD Scholarships

4 November 2026

Busitema University’s Master of Science in Climate Change and Disaster Management (MCC) has been selected for support under the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme, opening a new funding opportunity for up to 13 postgraduate students beginning in the 2027/2028 academic year.

The new scholarship allocation provides for five in-country students and eight students from other African countries, subject to the availability of funds from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

In the 2025 DAAD funding call, Busitema University's MCC programme was among 16 programmes selected from 416 submissions across Africa.

The development comes as Assoc. Prof. Samson Rwahwire, Director of Graduate Studies, Research and Innovations and Coordinator of DAAD-Funded Graduate Programmes, and Ms. Harriet Nabirye, Principal Institutional Advancement Officer responsible for Internationalisation and Partnerships, attend the DAAD In-Country/In-Region Network Conference with Partner Institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The conference, taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 4 to 6 November 2026, brings together DAAD and its partner institutions to discuss postgraduate scholarship programmes and strengthen cooperation among participating universities.

Busitema University has received DAAD support for its Master of Public Health (MPH) programme since the 2019 funding call, with the final DAAD-supported cohort admitted in the 2026/2027 academic year. The University had previously submitted MCC for consideration during the 2019 call, when the MPH programme was selected and MCC placed on the reserve list. In the 2025 call, MCC secured selection, while the University's Master of Science in Materials Engineering was placed on reserve.

The DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme supports postgraduate education at selected institutions across Africa, enabling qualified graduates to undertake advanced studies in their home countries or elsewhere in the region. Its focus includes developing professionals and researchers who can contribute to higher education and address development challenges.

Under the new arrangement, successful applicants will receive support towards tuition fees, monthly living expenses, study and research costs, and thesis publication. Students awarded in-region scholarships will also be eligible for travel and health insurance support under the applicable DAAD conditions.

Applications for the 2027 MCC scholarships are already open, with 12 November 2026 set as the deadline for submission through the DAAD portal. Prospective students must also apply separately for admission to Busitema University, following the University's admission requirements and deadlines.
