Busitema University has constituted a Search Committee to identify and recommend a candidate for the position of its third Chancellor. The move follows the end of the tenure of the outgoing Chancellor, Prof. Vinand Nantulya, and marks the beginning of a new phase in the university’s leadership.

The Search Committee was officially constituted on Friday, June 27, 2025, during the 70th Meeting of the University Council, which was held virtually. The Chancellor serves as the titular head of the university, presiding over graduations and representing the institution at key official events.

According to Prof. William Bazeyo, Chairperson of the University Council, the formation of the committee is in line with the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 (as amended). “We are committed to ensuring a transparent and merit-based process,” Prof. Bazeyo said. “The Chancellor plays a symbolic and inspirational role in our academic community. We are looking for an individual of high moral standing, intellectual distinction, and commitment to national development.”

The five-member committee brings together individuals from academia and the university’s governance structures. It will be chaired by Mrs. Rosemary Mutyabule, a University Council Member and Chairperson of the Appointments Board. Other members include:

  • Justice Godfrey Namundi – University Council Member
  • Professor Elly Sabiti – Representative of the University Senate
  • Assoc. Prof. Annabella Habinka Ejiri  – Representative of the University Senate
  • Mr. Aloysius Kiribaki – University Council Member
  • Mrs. Racheal Wandeka – Ag. University Secretary and Committee Secretary

The committee’s work is expected to conclude within two months.
The Search Committee will develop selection criteria, invite nominations from the public, conduct interviews, and submit a shortlist of three candidates to the University Council. The final appointment will be made by the President of Uganda, who serves as the Visitor to the university.

Public nominations are expected to open within the next few weeks. The Council encouraged all stakeholders, including alumni and academic bodies, to participate actively in the process.
Busitema University, one of Uganda’s public universities, was established in 2007 and has since grown to include several campuses across Eastern Uganda. Known for its strong focus on science, engineering, and technology, the institution has played a vital role in training professionals in key development sectors.

The appointment of a new Chancellor will not only mark the end of one era but also set the tone for Busitema University's next chapter as it continues its journey toward academic excellence and societal impact.
