Busitema University Hosts Inaugural Leadership Training for Top Management and Staff

Busitema University held its first-ever Leadership Training for top management and staff on April 9, 2025 at the Mbale Clinical Research Institute. The training, which was also accessible online, aimed to equip university leaders with foundational knowledge and practical skills in organizational leadership. Going forward, the event is set to become an annual fixture on the University’s calendar.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Waako, officially opened the session by welcoming all attendees to what he described as a landmark initiative. “This type of training is essential in highlighting strengths and weaknesses,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of continuous leadership development. He also applauded the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance, Prof. Pakoyo Kamba, for spearheading the organization of the event.
Prof. Kamba introduced the guest facilitator, Mr. Mugisha Mustapha Barnabas, who joined virtually to deliver an insightful presentation on leadership principles. Mr. Mugisha shared personal experiences, including how a challenging moment at a technical school established by Germans in Hoima became a turning point in his educational journey, thanks to his grandfather’s encouragement. He emphasized that a leader's vision must align with their purpose, drawing inspiration from Nelson Mandela.
"Management controls decisions whereas administration oversees processes," Mr. Mugisha noted, stressing the distinction between the two and the importance of micromanagement in certain leadership contexts.
The training also featured a second session chaired by Prof. Kibuule, the Faculty Dean of the Mbale Campus. In this session, Prof. Waako highlighted the importance of open dialogue within organizations and urged leaders not to shy away from tough decisions. “If you do not have enemies, you are not a good leader,” he joked, drawing laughter from the audience while referencing former U.S. President Donald Trump. He further emphasized the need for shared vision and unity among staff, reinforcing the importance of aligning with Busitema University’s core values.
The final session, chaired by the University Bursar, Mr. Ojambo Wilberforce, provided participants with valuable insights into the University’s financial processes, reinforcing the role of financial literacy in effective leadership.
The event marked a significant step in strengthening leadership across the institution and set the tone for future professional development at Busitema University.
