EAGC, Busitema University Partner to Boost Agribusiness in East Africa
The East Africa Grain Council, EAGC, and Busitema University signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2025 to strengthen agribusiness opportunities in Uganda and the wider East African region.
The partnership was intended to support agribusiness expos, training, knowledge exchange and practical learning opportunities for students pursuing agriculture and agribusiness-related programmes. The first Regional Agribusiness Expo was scheduled for August 2025 at Busitema University’s Arapai Campus.
The expo was expected to feature crop and livestock demonstration units, agricultural machinery displays and business-to-business interactions. Farmers and other stakeholders were also expected to receive training on new technologies, capacity building and access to industry knowledge.
Held under the theme, “Fostering wealth creation, resilience, and sustainable agriculture through agribusiness and innovation”, the expo was expected to bring together stakeholders from the agro-inputs, machinery, agribusiness, insurance, manufacturing, trade and export sectors.
David Mutazindwa, Chairperson of the EAGC Board of Directors, said the partnership would create opportunities for meaningful dialogue between stakeholders and clients, leading to demand-driven products tailored to farmers’ needs.
“We are excited to embark on this transformative journey with Busitema University,” Mutazindwa said. “Our goal is to unlock the full potential of the agribusiness sector in the region by promoting sustainability, innovation and economic prosperity.”
He added that the expo would enable farmers to interact directly with seed producers and agricultural machinery manufacturers, helping them distinguish genuine products from counterfeit agricultural inputs.
“this expo is expected to attract hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of farmers from Uganda and neighboring countries such as south sudan and kenya,” he added.
The partnership also included apprenticeship opportunities and industry placements for students pursuing agribusiness-related courses, giving them a chance to gain practical experience and engage with players in the agricultural sector.
Busitema University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Waako, welcomed the collaboration, saying it would strengthen academic excellence and community engagement.
“Through hosting the Regional Agribusiness Expo and facilitating collaborative initiatives, we are confident in making a lasting impact on the agricultural sector while promoting the university’s innovations,” Waako said.
