Developing Training Programmes in Power Systems Engineering
In a groundbreaking collaboration, several prestigious universities and industry partners in East Africa have come together to develop comprehensive training programmes in Power Systems Engineering. The initiative, known as the "University Industry Partnership on Enhancing Power Sector Skilling in East Africa (UIPEP EA)," has been made possible through a significant grant worth £100,000 awarded under the Higher Education Partnerships in sub-Saharan Africa (HEP SSA) 22/24.
Starting from Monday, 3rd July to Friday, 7th July 2023, Busitema University, in conjunction with Oxford University, Strathmore University, Makerere University, University of Dar es Salaam, and Technical University of Kenya, has been diligently working on crafting these training programmes. The aim is to enhance the skill set of professionals in the power sector, fostering innovation and expertise in this crucial field.
Leading the charge is the esteemed Prof Malcolm McCulloch from Oxford University, whose pivotal role in the entire engagement has been instrumental. With his expertise and guidance, the team is confident in achieving the project's ambitious objectives.
The strategic collaborations identified during the development process include Green Hydrogen, E-cooking & E-mobility, and the Water, Energy & Food nexus. These areas represent key focus points where the partners will pool their collective knowledge and resources to drive progress and innovation within the power sector.
The collaboration involves a prestigious lineup of partners, including Strathmore University, Oxford University, University of Dar es Salaam, Makerere University, Busitema University, Technical University of Kenya, KenGen, KeTraCo, and KPLC. Together, they are committed to revolutionizing the power sector in East Africa and addressing the challenges of the future.
This ambitious undertaking not only marks a significant step towards enhancing power sector expertise in East Africa but also sets an exemplary model for university-industry partnerships in the region. As this initiative gains momentum, it is expected to pave the way for advancements in Green Hydrogen technology, E-cooking & E-mobility solutions, and the sustainable integration of Water, Energy & Food resources in the region.
The dedication of the participating institutions and the support of the Higher Education Partnerships in sub-Saharan Africa (HEP SSA) initiative promise a brighter future for power systems engineering in East Africa. Through skill development, innovation, and collaborative efforts, this joint venture seeks to create lasting impacts in the region's power sector and beyond.
