Busitema University has won a bronze medal at the 12th All-Africa University Games, Cairo 2026, after the men’s chess team finished third in the Chess Blitz Tournament hosted at Ain Shams University.

Representing the University were Rubangakene Ceaser and Byawaka Alvin Herbert, who competed against university chess players from across Africa in the fast-paced Blitz format.

Their third-place finish earned Busitema University a place on the podium and added a bronze medal to the University’s performance at the continental games.

Their podium finish marks an important achievement for Busitema University at a continental competition that has brought together universities from across Africa for nine days of sport, academic exchange and cultural engagement.

The Cairo 2026 Games, running from 8 to 16 September 2026, attracted about 2,000 participants from 81 universities across 17 African countries. The programme features 18 main sports, alongside para-sports and recreational activities, with competitions being held at several venues across Greater Cairo, including Ain Shams University.

Ain Shams University is hosting chess among several disciplines during the Games, which are being organised by the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Federation of African University Sports (FASU) and the Egyptian University Sports Federation.

The medal was presented during an award ceremony attended by senior officials from Egypt’s higher education and university sports sectors, including Prof. Abdelaziz Konsowa, Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research; Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, President of the Federation of African University Sports (FASU); and Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, among other officials.

The achievement adds to Busitema University’s visibility at a continental university sporting event and provides an opportunity for its students to compete, interact and build connections with their peers from universities across Africa.

The bronze-medal finish also highlights the competitive talent within Busitema University’s student community, particularly in a discipline that demands concentration, strategic thinking, analysis and quick decision-making.

The University congratulates Rubangakene Ceaser and Byawaka Alvin Herbert for their achievement and for representing Busitema University and Uganda at the continental level. Their performance in Cairo has given Busitema University another podium finish to celebrate as the University continues its campaign at the 12^th All Africa University Games.
