Busitema University Partners with UAP Old Mutual to Provide Medical Insurance for Staff
Busitema University has unveiled the medical insurance plan for its 503 staff, aiming to alleviate the financial burden of medical expenses. During the MOU signing between UAP Old Mutual Insurance Company and the university at the Makerere liaison office, Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Waako revealed that the University staff would no longer have to struggle with high medical costs. He noted that many staff members had been forced to seek expensive private healthcare services, which strained their finances hence affecting their performance
The renewable one-year insurance plan will cover maternity care for women, both inpatient and outpatient services, funeral expenses, and dental care up to 5 million. Prof. Waako thanked the government for providing a 400 million release cover, which allowed them to select UAP Old Mutual after a competitive bidding process. The insurance coverage is set to commence in April of this year.
The Vice Chancellor highlighted how medical expenses, transportation, and other costs had significantly impacted staff participation at the university. He noted that with branches in rural areas like Namasagali in Kamuli district, accessing healthcare required considerable effort and resources.
With over 6000 students, Busitema University is one of the fastest growing Universities in the region, offering demanding programmes such as Mining & Textile Engineering among others. Tumwesigye Gilbert, representing UAP Assurance, expressed readiness to provide the medical cover and appreciated being chosen by the university. Other witnesses to the signing included Martha Apolot, the university's legal officer, Mr. Abert Mutungwire Matsiko, the university secretary, and Dr. Charles Muweesi the Director of the Directorate of Insititutional Advancement
