Busitema University IDEA Fellowship Program Hosts Ebola Conference 2025

The Ebola Outbreak Conference March 13, 2025, hosted by the IDEA Fellowship Program of Busitema University, brought together experts, policymakers, and researchers to discuss strengthening Ebola outbreak preparedness and response. Professor Peter Olupot-Olupot led discussions on revising the nomenclature of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) to remove stigma, proposing terms like "Filoviral Haemorrhagic Fever" (FHF),  "Severe Viral Haemorrhagic Fever" (SVHF), “Viral Haemorrhagic Fever” sub types” Z”, “S” or “B” in alignment with WHO’s standard approach to naming diseases or following from the recent WHO’s renaming of Monkey Pox to MPox. Dr. Bwire Godfrey and Dr. Okiror William, moderated by Professor Duncan Banks of the Open University UK, emphasized the need for real-time data tracking, early warning systems, and improved diagnostics to enhance outbreak detection. Dr. Mulongo Muhamed and Prof. Pauline Byakika, the Vice Chancellor of Mbarara University of Science & Technology, facilitated by Prof. Saphina Biira, stressed the importance of quarantine interventions and continued clinical trials for Ebola vaccines and treatments. Professor Paul Waako, The Vice Chancellor of Busitema University, in a session on capacity building and policy, highlighted the IDEA Fellowship’s achievements, having trained 17 epidemiologists in surveillance, outbreak investigation, and epidemic response, while advocating for regional program expansion. Furthermore, by Dr. Alex Ario and Dr. Thomas Nyirenda build a case of capacity building from needs assessment to funding opportunities. Dr Nyirenda highlighted the achievements of EDCTP 1-3 programmes in capacity building through fellowships, research and infrastructural development. Dr. Ocero Andrew and Prof. Okware Sam, moderated by Professor Sophina, focused on policy reforms and stakeholder coordination to strengthen outbreak preparedness. Dr Ocero’s analyses on funding gaps and inputs brought insight on need for strategic funding partnerships. In his closing remarks, Professor Olupot-Olupot called for translating insights from the conference into actions and acknowledged IDEA Fellowship Program Fellow Sarah Racheal Akello for leading the organizing committee. The conference will publish a final report with actionable recommendations, and participants were encouraged to engage in the Global Ebola Research Network (GERN).
