On 16th April 2024, Vice-Chancellor Professor Waako led a delegation from the University to meet with officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport to deliberate on how to operationalize this visionary endeavor. The meeting was chaired by the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Mr. Bageya Waiswa, and underscored a collaborative effort to translate a pivotal decision into tangible action, marking a significant milestone in Uganda's educational landscape.

Busitema University and International Hospital Kampala (IHK)- C-Care Uganda have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at providing comprehensive training and practical experience to students pursuing the Bachelor of Anaesthesia degree. The MoU was signed on behalf of the University by Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Waako, who was accompanied by Associate Professor Pakoyo Kamba, Deputy Vice Chancellor Finance and Administration, Dr. Charles Muweesi, Director-Institutional Advancement, and Mr. Paddy Namuremire, Director Planning.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Professor Waako emphasized the importance of partnerships in enhancing the quality of education and training. He noted that the collaboration with IHK-C-Care Uganda will provide students with hands-on experience in a modern and well-equipped healthcare facility. "This partnership is a major step forward in our efforts to produce competent and skilled anesthesia professionals who are ready to meet the growing healthcare needs of our country," said Professor Waako.

IHK-C-Care Uganda Chief Executive Officer, expressed his delight at the partnership, stating that it will contribute to the development of a skilled workforce in the field of anesthesia. "We are committed to providing students with the best possible training experience and are confident that this collaboration will produce graduates who are well-prepared to excel in their careers.

Busitema University and Mbale Clinical Research Institute (MCRI), in collaboration with the University of Bergen, have secured a grant of 1.1 million USD to investigate the potential of sunflower seed oil massage in improving the survival of premature infants in Uganda.

Premature birth affects approximately 15 million newborns annually, predominantly in low- and middle-income countries like Uganda. Among the extremely premature babies (weighing less than 1.5 kilograms), nearly 40% succumb before the age of one.

The urgent need for interventions to reduce mortality among premature babies is highlighted by the Sustainable Development Goal targets. One promising intervention is the topical application of sunflower seed oil, administered via gentle skin massage.

Premature babies have delicate skin that promotes excessive water and heat loss, while also serving as an entry point for bacteria. Sunflower seed oil application strengthens the skin's barrier, aiding in weight gain, preventing infection, and reducing mortality. Interestingly, some cultures in Eastern and Northern Uganda traditionally apply shea butter, locally known as "Mooyao," to the skin of their newborns, with reported positive outcomes. However, routine newborn massage is not widely practiced.

The research will be conducted at the Mbale Regional Hospital Neonatal Unit. Principal investigators from Uganda include Prof. David Mukunya and Dr. Kathy Burgoine, who will collaborate with Prof. Thorkild Tylleskar and Prof. Ingunn Engebretsen from the University of Bergen. Prof. Gary Darmstadt from Stanford University will also contribute as a key collaborator. Other co-investigators include Prof. Peter Olupot Olupot (Busitema University and MCRI), Prof. Milton Musaba, Dr. Agnes Napyo, Prof. Peter Waiswa (Makerere University), Andrew Clarke, and Sarah Williams from Save the Children UK.

This collaborative study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of sunflower seed oil in enhancing survival rates among premature infants in Uganda. The findings could provide a safe and cost-effective intervention, especially in resource-limited settings, to reduce premature infant mortality and improve global health outcomes.

Today, His Excellency William W Popp, the United States Ambassador to Uganda, visited the Faculty of Health Sciences at Busitema University. The main purpose of his visit was to witness the activities of the Peace Corps Funded Projects under the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The Ambassador was welcomed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Waako, who noted that William is the first ambassador to visit the university, despite the strategic partnership between the U.S. Embassy and the University. Waako revealed that he reached out to the Peace Corps Society in 2015, leading to the establishment of the Peace Corp Funded Projects at the Faculty of Health Sciences. The Vice Chancellor expressed appreciation for the positive impact of the Peace Corp volunteers on the faculty, highlighting the increase in academic staff to over 50 and the total student enrollment now standing at approximately 500.

Prof. Dan Kibuule, the Dean of the Faculty, expressed gratitude for the capacity-building support provided by the Peace Corp program. He specifically commended Brenda, one of the Peace Corp volunteers, for her outstanding work. The Dean also requested permission from the Ambassador for the Peace Corp volunteers to visit the university's hospital wards.

In response, Ambassador William thanked the university for collaborating with the Peace Corp Funded Projects and appreciated the volunteers for taking the time to meet with him in person. He promised to share the accomplishments of their collaboration when he returns to the United States.

Dr. Lydia Ssenyonga, Head of the Department of Nursing, expressed gratitude for the lessons learned from the Peace Corp volunteers. She also suggested the introduction of specialized nursing programs at the degree level to allow students to delve deeper into specific nursing fields. Dr. Ssenyonga requested the Vice Chancellor to establish a separate School of Nursing, rather than combining it with the School of Medicine, which she believes overshadows nursing education.

The Ministry of Education has officially transferred the former Kabwangasi Primary Teachers College to Busitema University. This follows a policy shift that phased out the None core Primary Teachers’ Colleges and is part of the ministry’s commitment to adapt to changing educational needs nationwide.

The handover ceremony, conducted on January 10, 2024, marks a pivotal moment for Busitema University, as it incorporates Kabwangasi, established by the colonial government in 1934, into its academic fold. Kabwangasi Primary Teachers' College, renowned as one of the oldest and most distinguished teacher training institutions in Eastern Uganda, will now become an integral part of Busitema University's extensive network.

The Ministry of Education's representative Dr.Annet Mugisha Kajura emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts, urging stakeholders to come together and work towards the common goal of advancing education. Emphasizing the streamlined administrative process, she outlined that all repurposed Non-core Primary Teachers’ Colleges would be absorbed by nearby Core Primary Teachers' Colleges. Furthermore, she announced that all pertinent documents from the non-core institutions would be seamlessly transferred to the adjacent Core Primary Teachers' Colleges, enabling students from these institutions to conveniently retrieve their documents from the nearest Core Primary Teachers' College. This cohesive approach aims to ensure a smooth transition and continued support for students affected by these changes.

Vice Chancellor Prof Paul Waako expressed heartfelt congratulations to the people of Butebo for gaining a university. He detailed the university's structure, thanking individuals and institutions that played pivotal roles, including the generous land donor and the Anglican Church for its innovation. Prof Waako outlined the institution's plan to establish two faculties: the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) with a Pharmaceutical focus and the Faculty of Science and Education (FSE).

Dr. Godfrey Namudi; the Council representative, underscored the importance of accessibility and growth. He called upon the Ministry of Education to increase the budget for Busitema University, acknowledging the institution's expansion and its positive impact on the community.

Busitema University has held a collaboration engagement meeting with Vanke School of Public Health(VSPH), Tsinghua University - China with the aim of building high-standard Public Health training in Uganda and the world at large. The Busitema University Delegation was welcomed by the Associate Dean of VSPH Professor Kaibo Wang, together with Professor Guangio Li, Jiaxuan Yang, Shasha Tao & Yuran Cao.

At this meeting, the Head of the Department of Public Health Professor David Mukunya was represented by Dr Samuel Baker Obakiro who made a presentation on the collaboration areas of focus: Health Policy and System Innovation Research, Disease Control and Prevention, management of Big Data in Health Care, as well as Global Health Governance.

During this meeting, the Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Waako reaffirmed the University's readiness to improve training and research in the field of Public Health. He emphasized the collaboration to figure out avenues to address communicable Disease Control, Climate Change and Population Health, Health Engineering, Maternal and Child Health, mental and Psychological Health, Health Policy and Technology Evaluation as well as Global Epidemic Intelligence Monitoring.
Another collaboration engagement was held with the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and while representing the School Dean Professor Feng Qian, Professor Ligong Chen welcomed the team from Busitema University and their commendable work in drug production and therapeutics in Uganda especially the viral relief drug TAZCOV. He confirmed and assured the University collaboration guarantee in the fields of training new generation Phamacetical professionals, development of Innovative drugs and therapeutics as well as Phamacetical innovation and industrial upgrade.

Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Waako assured the team at Tsinghua University of his assurance to assimilate the world's cutting-edge scientific and technological means to enhance scientific research more efficiently in drug production and management and confirmed Busitema University's assurance to promote this research-led development in fighting world disease with drug and vaccine migration programs available from the two institutions.
The other members from Busitema University included Dr. Charles Muweesi, Assistant Director-Directorate of Institutional Advancement, Dr. Richard Oriko, and Ms. Brenda Nakazibwe from STI-OP.

Mahathi Infra Uganda has agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding with Busitema University to foster the development of the Maritime Institute. This decision was made during a courtesy visit of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Waako, in the company of the University's Top Management Team, the Director of Maritime Institute, Prof. Waiswa Wilson Mwanja, and Maritime technical staff on Thursday, July 28, 2023.

During the visit, the team engaged in fruitful discussions and reached several agreements. The key areas of collaboration include providing mentorship and internship opportunities for maritime students, particularly in shipbuilding and naval engineering. This will help students gain practical experience and enhance their skills in the maritime industry.

Another aspect of the agreement involves program development and accreditation. Busitema University and Mahathi Infra will work together to design comprehensive and industry-relevant maritime programs to ensure students receive high-quality education.

The partnership also aims to promote student and staff mobility between the two entities. This will enable exchange programs and knowledge sharing, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

To address the current challenges faced by Mahathi Infra regarding access to shipbuilding materials, the agreement will focus on developing short professional courses and offering practical training for the students. By doing so, the company aims to build local expertise in ship engineering and construction.

Moreover, the collaboration will connect Busitema University to a maritime professional association for certification. This step will help students and staff gain recognition for their expertise and skills in the field of maritime engineering.

The Chief Executive of Mahathi Infra emphasized the company's readiness to partner with Busitema University in training to bridge the current human resource challenges in the country. Currently, the company relies heavily on foreign shipbuilding experts, with only a few technicians being locals. This partnership seeks to address this disparity and promote local talent in the maritime industry.

Mahathi Infra Uganda has already made significant strides in shipbuilding, having completed and launched their first ship in July 2022. The ship is operational on Lake Victoria, and they are in the process of constructing a second one. The cargo ship is expected to reduce the costs of fuel transportation and increase the country's capacity to mitigate the fuel crisis.

In conclusion, the partnership between Mahathi Infra Uganda and Busitema University holds the potential to foster growth and development in the maritime sector in Uganda.
