A quality assurance visit focusing on shaping the future of disability, inclusivity and academic excellence at Busitema University

The Directorate of Quality Assurance at Busitema University, with recommendations from the University Council is conducting campus visits to inspect all faculties regarding their inclusion programs, with a focus on gender, Persons with Disabilities, and student welfare. The inspection kicked off from the Namasagali campus on Tuesday, May 14th, 2024, led by Mr. Aloysius Kiribaki, Chairperson of the Quality Assurance, Gender, and ICT Committee of the University Council, accompanied by a selected team from management led by the Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Waako. Other members of management moving with the committee chairperson include; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) Associate Professor Saphina Biira, Ms. Racheal Nambafu Wandeka (Deputy University Secretary), Dr. Charles Eryenyu ( Director of Quality Assurance), Dr. Charles Muweesi (Director of the Directorate of Institutional Advancement) and Mr. Wanyama Joseph Erogo (Deputy Dean of Students). The team interacted with students, staff and faculty leaders with a particular interest on inclusivity areas like the library, classroom blocks, accommodation, wash rooms and other facilities that are beneficial to the students.

The team was welcomed to the various campuses by the respective Faculty Deans who were responsible for explaining the inclusion programs and strategies at their faculties, gathering students to voice concerns, and elaborating on the student’s grievances especially those of Persons with Disabilities to the committee. The delegation proceeded to Arapai and Pallisa campuses on May 15th, Mbale and Nagongera campuses on May 16th. Throughout the visits, the delegation identified various challenges faced by students, particularly those with disabilities. These challenges include inadequate infrastructure design, such as the lack of ramps in classrooms and dormitories, difficulties in reading and writing, visual impairments, and the high cost of necessary gadgets like hearing aids and spectacles. Proposed solutions encompass sensitizing students to disabilities to combat stigmatization, creating accessible infrastructure, providing adapted learning materials, and advocating for inclusive policies.

These visits will be concluded on May 17th, 2024 at the main campus of Busitema University with a conference on inclusivity themed; “Shaping the future from policy to practice in achieving inclusive excellence in academic settings.” The Guest of Honour for the conference will be Hon. Hellen Asamo (State Minister of state for disability) while other members that will participate in the conference include Professor Paul Waako (Vice Chancellor), Mrs. Mutyabule Rosemary (Chairperson of the University Council), Hon. Laura Kanushi (Woman Member of Parliament), Mr. Aloysius Kiribaki (Chairperson Quality Assurance committee of University Council), Dr. Charles Eryenyu (Deputy Director of Quality Assurance) and Ms. Esther Kyozira (CEO NUDIPU). The conference will attract all University managers, Deans of faculties, stakeholders and persons who have interests and passion in inclusivity. Conclusively, the conference will provide a platform to harness collective wisdom and insights to shape the future of inclusive education at Busitema University and Uganda as a whole
