Legacy of Leadership: Concluding Session of Busitema University's 4th Council

The fourth Council of Busitema University held its final meeting and retreat on June 20th-21st, 2024. Themed "Performance of the 4th Busitema Council," the retreat was presided over by Mr. Kiribaki Aloysius, Chairperson of the Quality Assurance Committee of the University Council, who delivered the opening remarks. The retreat was graced by several dignitaries, including the chief guest, Professor Vinand Nantulya, Chancellor of Busitema University; the Vice Chancellor, Professor Paul Waako; Mrs. Rosemary Mutyabule, Chairperson of the 4th Council of the University; and various other distinguished members of the University Council.

Throughout the retreat, numerous speeches were delivered, with particular emphasis on a detailed oration by Professor Waako who outlined the significant milestones achieved by the University Council in realizing the University’s strategic goals, which include Strengthening excellence in education and student life, Increasing high impact research, innovation and Entrepreneurship, Strengthening partnerships, and Enhancing productivity through effective leadership, governance, and management.

Professor Waako elaborated on several accomplishments that marked the tenure of the 4th Council. He began by discussing the accreditation of six new PhD programs, highlighting how these additions have expanded the university's academic portfolio and bolstered its research capabilities. He also emphasized the installation of Edu-roam, which has significantly improved access to the University’s Wi-Fi network, now supporting 1,946 registered users, thereby enhancing digital connectivity for students and staff.

Furthermore, Professor Waako highlighted the development and readiness for commercialization of several research products, demonstrating the University’s commitment to innovation and the practical application of research. He mentioned the operationalization of the Directorate of Institutional Advancement, a strategic move aimed at enhancing the University's outreach and development initiatives. Additionally, the establishment of an Institute of Open and Distance Learning has expanded educational access, providing more flexible learning opportunities. The physical transformation of the campus was another key achievement noted by Professor Waako. The construction of a new University gate symbolizes a renewed sense of pride and identity. Moreover, the approval and upcoming construction of the NAPRIC facility in Mbale, alongside various construction, renovation, and maintenance projects, illustrate the Council's dedication to improving campus infrastructure. Professor Waako mentioned several additional achievements of the University Council beyond those specified. He also noted that the University continues to face challenges and has significant progress yet to be made.

Mrs. Rosemary Mutyabule, the Chairperson of the 4th University Council, also delivered a heartfelt speech. She expressed her gratitude to the council members with whom she had served, specifically thanking Professor Waako for his relentless efforts in creating partnerships and opportunities that facilitated the University’s growth and development. She acknowledged the hard work of the other council members in achieving various milestones for the University and recognized the challenges that still lie ahead, urging the next University Council to address these issues. She later dismissed the meeting.

The retreat concluded with the Chancellor awarding certificates to the Council members in appreciation of their service on the 4th University Council, which had been in power from 2020 to 2024. This gesture underscored the collective efforts and accomplishments of the Council in steering the University toward its strategic objectives.
