Busitema University Leads Teacher Training on Activity-Based Learning at St. Paul High School aaron Jan 03, 2025

Four lecturers from Busitema University, led by Dr. Richard Cliffe Ssenyunzi, the Principal Investigator of the Activity-Based Learning and Teaching Approach (ABLTA) project, conducted a three-day training session for teachers of St. Paul High School, Petete. This initiative, sponsored by the Science, Technology, and Innovation Office of the Presidency (STI-OP) in collaboration with Busitema University, focused on developing learning adventures as part of the Activity-Based Learning and Teaching Approach.

The training was hosted at the Mbale Faculty of Health Sciences and officially opened by the Honourable Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation Hon Monica Musenero, alongside the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Education Prof David Kani Olema.

The closing ceremony was graced by the Honourable Minister and the Vice-Chancellor of Busitema University Professor Paul Waako, underscoring the importance of this initiative in enhancing innovative teaching methods. This program marks a significant step towards equipping educators with practical tools to foster interactive and effective learning environments in secondary education.

Thursday 14 th September, 2023 at Grand Global Hotel-Kampala, Associate Professor Joseph K.B. Matovu (Principal Investigator- PI) from the Faculty of Health Sciences – Mbale, disseminated his research findings under the research project titled: PEST4MEN. The workshop theme was: An Intervention to Reach Men in The Fishing
Communities with HIV Testing Services.

The workshop guest of Honor was Professor Julius Wandabwa – Dean Faculty of Health Sciences and the workshop attracted membership from the study participants, Faculties from Busitema University, Makerere University and a Special Introduction from Associate Professor David Mukunya from the department of Public Health, Busitema University.

He gave a project description whereby the study targeted not mainly men on the fishing sites Mwema Fishing Community in Kalangala District and Kasaali B Fishing landing site in Buvuma District) but also others in different areas outside landing sites. Thus the study focused not only on men around the island but also men elsewhere. He described that fishing communities have high HIV incidences and prevalence than that mainland dubbed as ‘’net sinks ‘’.

The main purpose of the study was; to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the peer –led HIV testing interventions on the HIV testing uptake among men in the two fishing communities, the first district encountered was Kalangala at Mwema fishing site, with a population 1200, with about 58 percent male, and an age bracket being 15 years and above, second district was Buvuma at a fishing site called Kasaali B fishing site.

The PI further shared how peer leaders and men were selected. These were selected basing on the following; Testing period (Last tested at least 3months ago), Being aged 15 plus years, a known member in a well-defined social network, being personally close and known to the peer leader. And after selection each peer leader (PL) received a socio-demographic form to capture details of the distribution event with the choice being theirs to choose when to begin the distribution. The characteristics of men that were allowed included the following age bracket as follows 18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45 plus.

Their main occupation of the participants was fishing and mainly their medium of communication being Luganda language ,800 kits were given, 378 kits were given to Mwema group ,422 kits given to Kasaali group, out of the 800 kits ,782 were the only one distributed and 18 kits were returned. However, some issues raised with the testing;

KEY FINDINGS OF THE STUDY
The peer-led HIV self-testing intervention is feasible and can be implemented in a fishing community context and HIV self-testing is highly acceptable and identifies a sizeable proportion of a newly diagnosed men living with HIV who can link to HIV care services.

Secondary distribution of HIV self –kits from men too significant, others is acceptable and can be used to reach female sexual partners with HIV-ST service. findings have implications for the implementation of the Social Network Strategy (SNS) by implementing partners. There is Need to lighten-up the initial screening procedures to avoid repeat testing of known HIV+ KPS. Men can take HIV self-test kits to female partners (early identification of previously undiagnosed HIV infections). findings can also be used to inform the design of other peer-led HIV prevention interventions for other hard to reach populations

STUDY RECOMMENDATIONS
The study recommends that an Alternative HIV self-test kits distribution mechanisms besides peer-led HIVST kits distribution. Innovative approaches to improve linkage to and retention in HIV care among HIV+ men. Effects of peer-led HIVST vs other alternative kits distribution systems in improving HIV testing linkage to and retention in HIV care. Mechanisms to reach women in fishing communities with HIV self-testing services.

The Faculty of Science and Education (FSE) at Busitema University kickstarted its academic year with a comprehensive Library Orientation program tailored for its incoming first-year students. The event, aimed at familiarizing students with the resources and protocols of the institution's library, commenced with a solemn prayer led by Mr. Omalla Wilberforce. The orientation proved to be an essential step in acquainting students with the academic tools at their disposal.

Mr. Mukungu Isaac, the facilitator for the program, took the lead in steering the registration and communication aspects of the orientation. Through a structured presentation, he delivered crucial information on various aspects of the library's functioning. Students were introduced to the core operations of the library, Library Rules and Regulations, and the essential Dos and Don'ts that govern the library environment.

A pivotal highlight of the orientation was the comprehensive explanation of the Library's operational hours. Students were made aware of the timings when they can access the library's vast collection of resources, providing them with ample opportunities to engage in research, study, and personal academic growth.

In this digital age, the orientation delved into online resources, equipping students with the necessary skills to navigate the Busitema University Library Website and the FSE Library site. The session included a practical guide to utilizing the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) for streamlined and efficient resource retrieval. Electronic resources (e-resources) were also extensively covered, shedding light on the wealth of digital materials accessible to students from various academic disciplines.

As the inaugural event of the academic year, the Library Orientation for first-year students at the Faculty of Science and Education stands as a testament to the institution's commitment to holistic education. The program not only cultivates students' understanding of library resources but also instills in them the values of scholarly inquiry and ethical academic conduct.

In summary, the successful Library Orientation at the Faculty of Science and Education serves as an auspicious commencement to the academic journey of the incoming first-year students. By fostering a strong foundation in library usage and research techniques, the institution ensures that its scholars are well-prepared to explore the depths of knowledge that lie ahead.

With a career spanning over two decades, she has continually demonstrated her dedication to advancing education, fostering research, and promoting scientific collaboration.

As a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Education, Dr. Biira has been a beacon of knowledge and inspiration for her students. Her expertise spans various fields, notably in the realm of Physics, Materials Science, and Nuclear Technology. Her extensive educational background includes a PhD in Physics (Materials Science and Nuclear Technology) from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, a Master's in Physics (Radiation & Environmental Physics) from Makerere University, and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Gulu University, Uganda.

Dr. Biira's accomplishments extend beyond the classroom. She is an accomplished M&E Practitioner and Quality Assurance Manager in Higher Education. Her training in Public Administration and Financial Management has equipped her with a versatile skill set that she has effectively employed in her administrative roles. Prior to her current position as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance and Administration), she served as the Deputy Director of Quality Assurance, showcasing her ability to contribute to the strategic growth and development of the university.

The academic world recognizes Dr. Biira not only for her administrative acumen but also for her impactful research contributions. She has authored over 30 publications in esteemed peer-reviewed journals, primarily focusing on Materials Science and Radiation Sciences. Her expertise has led her to serve as a reviewer for several journals within these disciplines, further demonstrating her commitment to the advancement of scientific knowledge.

Dr. Saphina Biira's dedication to scientific collaboration is evident through her affiliations with various international organizations. She holds prominent roles such as an Executive Committee member of the African Light Source (AfLS), as well as a Publicity and Outreach Coordinator for OWSD-National Chapter. Additionally, she is a respected member of the African Materials Research Society.

One of her most remarkable roles is her position as the Country Team Leader for Women in Physics at the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and ICWIP. In this capacity, Dr. Biira is actively working to promote gender equality and encourage the participation of women in the field of physics, inspiring future generations of scientists.

Dr. Saphina Biira's tireless dedication to her work, both in education and research, showcases her as a self-driven senior scientist, educator, and administrator. Her remarkable journey has been characterized by her ability to lead teams, achieve critical milestones, and deliver products and services that adhere to the highest standards.

Forum for African Women Educationalist (FAWE) Uganda Chapter has received a new frant from Mr. Forberg through Social initiatives to support 75 youth (70% female and 30% male students) from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and regions of Eastern and Northern Uganda for the academic year 2023-2024. The objective of the program is to enable students from the selected districts complete higher education; and provide academic and psycho-social support and facilitate pathways for the students to do internships, industrial practice and get employment. Students from the districts of Namayingo, Napak, Kween, Amuria, Abim, Luuka, Nwoya, Agago, and Moyo will be facilitated to access and complete Higher Education.

Busitema University witnessed a momentous occasion as the Vice-Chancellor, along with esteemed members of the Top Management, Deans of Faculties, and the Director of Graduate Studies, Research, and Innovations, came together for a significant blended inception meeting. The meeting served as a platform to engage with nine exceptional minds who secured the prestigious Science, Technology, and Innovation- Office of the President (STI-OP) grants in 2023.

The grant winners, namely Dr. Moses Kigozi, Dr. Emirant Amabayo, Dr. Richard Oriko, Dr. Richard Cliffe Ssenyunzi, Dr. Turyasingura Godfrey, Dr. Gavamukulya Yahaya, Dr. Humphrey Okechi, Dr. Samuel Baker Obakiro, and Prof. Kant Kanyarusoke, showcased their groundbreaking projects during the session.
