Busitema University’s journey to digitalization of education

Busitema University is one of the participants of the Uganda E-learning Initiative project, a pioneering effort aimed at enhancing access to quality education for 95,000 youth by 2026, with a special focus on empowering women and facilitating meaningful employment for thousands of people. On April 23rd, 2024, the University welcomed partners, the Mastercard Foundation and the Cyber Security School, for a pivotal monitoring visit whose objective is to assess Busitema University’s progress towards achieving the pilot goals and ensuring alignment with project focus areas by the end of May 2024.  
Led by Professor Jessica Aguti, the presentation highlighted significant milestones achieved as of April 20th, 2024. Notably, there has been a commendable increase in the number of online courses offered with the figure rising from 1307 t0 1544 since December 15th 2021. This surge underscores Busitema’s unwavering commitment to digitization and innovation in education. 
Furthermore, Professor Aguti emphasized the project's strategic alignment with Uganda's National Development Plan (NDP III) and Busitema University's own strategic objectives. By prioritizing gender inclusivity and excellence in education, the project not only enriches the academic landscape but also contributes to national development goals. 
Key intervention areas were also highlighted, including the provision of work readiness and entrepreneurship skills training. This holistic approach equips students with practical skills, making them more competitive in the job market. The establishment and deployment of a robust Learning Management System (LMS) further enhance the learning experience, reaching over 1,200 students enrolled in work readiness, entrepreneurship, and safeguarding courses. 
Focusing on the future, Busitema University outlined ambitious plans to further propel its e-learning initiatives. From ongoing staff training to the full digitization of pilot phase courses and the development of mobile learning (mLearning) courses, the university remains steadfast in its pursuit of educational excellence. As the presentation concluded, Busitema University expressed gratitude to the Mastercard Foundation for their unwavering support and acknowledged that the journey towards fully integrating e-learning into the fabric of the institution is ongoing. With a humble request for continued support, the university reaffirmed its commitment to empowering the next generation of learners through digital innovation.  
In essence, Busitema University's dedication to e-learning excellence serves as a beacon of hope, promising a brighter future for Uganda's youth and a testament to the transformative power of education.
