Busitema University has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Ultimate University Quiz Season Four after defeating Kyambogo University 330 points to 270 in the eighth game of the competition.

The Sunday contest tested students on taxation, world conflicts, African affairs and scientific inventions, with Busitema maintaining its lead through rounds that demanded speed, precision and a broad range of knowledge.

The University was represented by Innocent Walimbwa, Alex Debongo, Aggrey Joshua Sikoria and Mercy Ashaba, who competed against Kyambogo University's team of Herbert Alemi Asiki, Christopher Nure, Abdul Rashid Kizito and Prim Tusingwire.

Busitema established an early advantage in the taxation round, finishing with 100 points against Kyambogo's 40. The format awarded 10 points for each correct answer in the opening rounds, while an incorrect response gave the opposing team an opportunity to claim the points.

The questions required contestants to demonstrate knowledge of financial concepts, historical events and scientific developments. Busitema correctly identified a bill of lading as a document issued by a carrier to a shipper as a contract for transporting goods. Kyambogo also answered questions correctly, including one on income tax, which it identified as a tax levied directly on an individual's annual earnings or profits.

The world conflicts round brought further tests of accuracy, with questions on Swiss mercenary soldiers and the weapons they used, mustard gas during the First World War, and Agent Orange, the herbicide deployed by the United States military during the Vietnam War.

Both teams also tackled questions on African affairs and scientific inventions. These included Nigeria's relocation of its federal capital from Lagos to Abuja in 1991, the microwave oven, the safety elevator, vaccination against smallpox and the invention of the World Wide Web.

Despite Kyambogo's correct responses in several rounds, Busitema retained its advantage to finish the contest with a 60-point lead.

Ultimate University Quiz project lead Maxi Adii described the contest as a strong performance by both teams, noting that Busitema's early advantage made it difficult for Kyambogo to catch up.

Organised by Vision Group, the competition is sponsored by Bank of Uganda as platinum sponsor, alongside the Uganda Communications Commission, Uganda Revenue Authority, Capital Markets Authority, Turkish Airlines and the Parliament of Uganda. The games are broadcast on Bukedde TV, TV West and Wan Luo TV, and are also available through the Vision Digital Experience app.

The grand finale is scheduled for November 26. The competition's champions will receive a trophy and university equipment worth UGX 25 million, while each contestant and coach will receive a laptop and a shim, according to the report.
