Busitema University Hosts Workshop to Promote Open Access in Ugandan Libraries
Busitema University, in collaboration with DataCite, organised a highly impactful week-long workshop from May 27th to May 31st, 2024. The workshop aimed to equip librarians from various higher education institutions across Uganda with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively incorporate Open Access principles into their libraries.
The workshop was led by Dr. Fredrick Kiwuwa Lugya, the University Librarian at Busitema University, who drew upon his extensive experience and expertise in Library practice, Open Science, and Open Access initiatives to provide valuable training sessions. The event also featured keynote addresses from Ms. Iryna Kuchma, the Open Access Programme Manager at EIFL, and Mr. Bosun Obileye, the DataCite Regional Community Engagement Specialist – Africa. Ms Kuchma’s comprehensive overview of Open Access trends and best practices provided participants with a broad perspective on the subject, while Mr. Obileye’s contribution focused on the technical aspects of DataCite Open Infrastructure, including the use of DataCite tools and resources to manage and disseminate academic content as well as searchability and discoverability of research.
The primary objective of the workshop was to build the capacity of Ugandan librarians to implement Open Access strategies within their institutions. The structured program balanced theoretical knowledge with practical skills, enabling participants to understand Open Access, Open Science, and DataCite infrastructure principles and apply them effectively.
The workshop concluded with a certificate awarding ceremony officiated by the Vice Chancellor of Busitema University, Professor Paul Waako. The ceremony marked the completion of the workshop and celebrated the participants’ commitment to advancing Open Access in their institutions.
The workshop's success has highlighted the University's dedication and efforts toward promoting Open Access, Open Science, and DataCite Open Infrastructure in Uganda, ultimately contributing to the visibility and utility of academic research across the country.
